Stan Lee to Create Indian Comic Superhero 'Chakra - The Invincible' (Exclusive)

The comic creator's first Indian superhero revolves around a Mumbai teenage tech genius, Raju Rai, who develops an enhanced suit that activates mystical powers.

NEW DELHI - Comic legend Stan Lee will launch an original superhero for the Indian market with a team of Indian artists and writers working at Liquid Comics which has pacted with Lee's POW! Entertainment for the project.

Chakra - The Invincible will initially launch as a series of downloadable web and mobile comics distributed throughout India on Liquid’s recently announced Graphic India platform. Lee’s first digital comic book story on Chakra will be released for free in April 2012, exclusively onwww.graphicindia.com though a preview of concept art will be available later this week on the website.

Chakra tells the story of an Indian teenager, Raju Rai, a technology genius living in Mumbai. Determined to use science to unlock the secrets of human potential, Raju develops a technically-enhanced suit that activates the mystical Chakras of the body, unleashing newfound abilities and powers.

When the popularity of superhero comics flagged after World War II, the generation of young artists who’d pioneered the capes-and-tights genre scrambled to find new markets. Writer Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby—co-creators of Captain America in the early ’40s—found an unexpectedly rich vein with Young Romance, which they pitched to Crestwood Publications in 1947. For the next decade, Simon and Kirby made a lot of money for Crestwood pumping out “true confessions”-style stories about lovelorn women and the desperate lengths to which they would go to land a husband. The two men weren’t squandering their talents, either. Simon found he had a knack for tangled melodrama set in very specific milieus, while Kirby drew ordinary men and women with the same sweaty fervor that he lent to monsters and costumed do-gooders.

All of which means that the Michael Gagné-edited collection Young Romance: The Best Of Simon & Kirby’s Romance Comics(Fantagraphics) isn’t just a book of some minor historical interest; it’s a genuinely entertaining and artful set of comics, and in some ways more readable than Simon and Kirby’s adventure stories. Gagné divides the anthology into “pre-code” and “post-code,” and as Michelle Nolan notes in her introduction, the stories from 1955 to 1959 sport acleaner look and less complicated narratives. They’re still enjoyable—if only for Kirby’s version of Eisenhower-era placidity—but for the most part it’s the work that Simon and Kirby did before the Comics Code Authority intervened that wows. Simon’s plots deal with jealousy, class conflict, mistaken identity, selfishness, and selflessness—the romance staples—while Kirby’s art makes these tales of passion and deceit especially dynamic, with deep shadows and a mix of the glamorous and the lumpen. (Example of a kinky Kirby detail: In a story about a man sentenced to death, Kirby draws the hero with shaved temples, ready for the electric chair.) The Young Romance comics aren’t in the same league as Douglas Sirk’s subversive Hollywood melodramas, if only because Simon and Kirby weren’t intending to mess with their readers’ expectations. But in trying to create something new and vital and potentially lucrative, Simon and Kirby did depict a world of darkness and heavy emotion, inhabited by clean-looking people in pretty clothes.

Writer Keshni Kashyap and artist Mari Araki probably wouldn’t think of their graphic novel Tina’s Mouth: An Existential Comic Diary (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) as a descendant of Simon and Kirby, but the book has a lot more in common withYoung Romance than they might think. The form is different;Tina’s Mouth is a hybrid of illustrated text and straight comics, sort of like a Diary Of A Wimpy Kid for older teens and young adults who can handle the occasional “fuck.” But the “dear diary” narrative structure was a fixture of romance comics, too, and this story of a high-school sophomore angling for her first kiss while fighting with friends and rivals (and friends whobecome rivals) is very much in the Girls’ Romances/My Only Love mold.

Tina’s Mouth is also like Young Romance in that it’s idiosyncratic, and excellent. Kashyap’s high-school setting and “How will I get that dreamy boy to notice me?” plot have been done and even overdone—in movies and on TV, as well as in literature with and without pictures—but rarely as adroitly as in Tina’s Mouth, which has the advantage of so clearly being the product of Kashyap’s own experiences as an Indian-American of some privilege. Kashyap’s heroine, Tina, is a 15-year-old at an exclusive, multi-ethnic Southern California high school, where she takes a class on existentialism that requires her to keep a diary. She addresses the diary to Jean-Paul Sartre, and uses it to work through her heartbreak when her best friend ditches her to join the popular crowd. Tina decides to embrace “being,” and signs up for multiple extracurricular activities—including the drama club’s production of Rashomon—while going outside of her own small circle of misfits to try and connect with a cute, friendly skateboarder.

Araki’s art isn’t incredibly detailed; she makes good use of the layouts to control the pace and the emotion of Tina’s book-length monologue, but her drawings are mainly functional, giving the word balloons a place to anchor. That’s okay though, because the art doesn’t get in the way of Kashyap’s words, which are slangy and funny and honest, like a mix of John Hughes, J.D. Salinger and Marjane Satrapi. Tina’s Mouth eschews the usual heroes-and-villains approach to teenage romantic comedy. Everyone in this book—even the grown-ups—are just fumbling along, revising their belief systems on the fly, and trying not to think too hard about who they’ve hurt along the way. It’s difficult to write a book in the voice of a teenager that’s true to a character while still providing some outside perspective, but Kashyap and Araki have done just that here, using the comic-book portions ofTina’s Mouth to reveal truths that even the heroine doesn’t see yet. The result is a philosophical treatise, a coming-of-age story, and, yes, a romance comic, all rolled into one multi-hued, richly rewarding package.===================================

Speaking of Marjane Satrapi, her charming 2004 book The Sigh (Archaia) has recently been translated into English, and while on the surface it’s nothing like her groundbreaking autobiography Persepolis, it is in its own way about a young woman trying to find a path through a world where the value systems have been thrown out of whack. Written and illustrated in the mode of a children’s storybook—with crayon-heavy drawings not unlike the work of P.D. Eastman or Robert Lopshire—The Sigh tells the story of Rose, the daughter of a merchant who accidentally sells her to a mysterious being known as “Ah, The Sigh.” Rose is treated well by her captor, but curiosity gets the better of her, with tragic consequences that leave Rose exiled from paradise and sold into slavery. In just over 50 pages, Satrapi propels Rose from one adventure to another, having her heroine encounter princes, wicked housekeepers, dragons, bandits, and all manner of unhappy or unfulfilled folks that she helps out as a way of solving her own problems.

As with Satrapi’s Chicken With Plums, The Sigh takes the form of a folktale, but this book is more overtly fantastical, with magic spells and curses. At its core though, The Sigh follows a woman who keeps making terrible mistakes until she learns the rules of her reality and begins to make them conform to her wishes. In other words, it too is a romance comic of a kind. The trappings may seem antique and exotic, but the content is familiar. These are the stories we tell and re-tell. Only the clothes change.===================================

New Delhi: A comic book style doodle featuring the Anant Pai welcomed Google users in India on his 82nd birth anniversary. The doodle drawn in classic Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle style shows Uncle Pai, as Anant Pai was known to millions of young readers, surrounded by Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle comic books.

Anant Pai was born on September 17, 1929 at Karkala, Karnataka. A scientist by education, but an entertainer by vocation Uncle Pai initiated a comic revolution in India.

Amar Chitra Katha has shown millions of Indians the route to their roots. Tinkle has been the childhood companion of many for over two and half decades. In 1967, the educational comics series Amar Chitra Katha was launched. Each of the comics in this series was devoted to a person or event in Indian history, religion and mythology. Anant Pai conceptualised of all of these, and wrote the scenarios for most of them.

Just a month before his death he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award India's first ever Comic Convention held in New Delhi on February 19-20. Uncle Pai died on February 24, 2011 at the age of 81 following a heart attack.

Apart from being the brain behind these two comics, Anant Pai had also trained thousands of teens in personality development.

Google doodles have gained immense popularity over the past few years and the Google team has put out commemorative doodles on events ranging from news events, civic milestones, birthdays, death anniversaries and important dates in history.

Google estimates it has created more than 900 doodles since 1998, with 270 of them running in 2010 and more than 150 in 2011.

कौन हैं अन्ना हज़ारे?

भ्रष्टाचार के ख़िलाफ़ आंदोलन में आम आदमी को जोड़ने वाले 73 साल के सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता अन्ना हज़ारे का मूल नाम किसन बापट बाबूराव हज़ारे है.

अन्ना हज़ारे भारत के उन चंद नेताओं में से एक हैं, जो हमेशा सफेद खादी के कपड़े पहनते हैं और सिर पर गाँधी टोपी पहनते हैं.

उनका जन्म 15 जून, 1938 को महाराष्ट्र के भिंगारी गांव के एक किसान परिवार में हुआ. उनके पिता का नाम बाबूराव हज़ारे और मां का नाम लक्ष्मीबाई हजारे है. अन्ना के छह भाई हैं. अन्ना का बचपन बहुत ग़रीबी में गुज़रा.

परिवार की आर्थिक तंगी के चलते अन्ना मुंबई आ गए. यहां उन्होंने सातवीं तक पढ़ाई की. कठिन हालातों में परिवार को देख कर उन्होंने परिवार का बोझ कुछ कम करने के लिए फूल बेचनेवाले की दुकान में 40 रूपए महीने की पगार पर काम किया.

सेना में भर्ती

भारत-चीन युद्ध के बाद सरकार की अपील पर अन्ना सेना में बतौर ड्राइवर भर्ती हुए थे.

वर्ष 1962 में भारत-चीन युद्ध के बाद सरकार की युवाओं से सेना में शामिल होने की अपील पर अन्ना 1963 में सेना की मराठा रेजीमेंट में बतौर ड्राइवर भर्ती हुए थे.

1965 में भारत-पाकिस्तान युद्ध के दौरान अन्ना हज़ारे खेमकरण सीमा पर तैनात थे. 12 नवंबर 1965 को चौकी पर पाकिस्तानी हवाई बमबारी में वहां तैनात सारे सैनिक मारे गए. इस घटना ने अन्ना की ज़िंदगी को हमेशा के लिए बदल दिया.

घटना के 13 साल बाद अन्ना सेना से रिटायर हुए लेकिन अपने जन्म स्थली भिंगारी गांव भी नहीं गए. वे पास के रालेगांव सिद्धि में रहने लगे.

1990 तक हज़ारे की पहचान एक ऐसे सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता हुई, जिसने अहमदनगर जिले के रालेगांव सिद्धि को अपनी कर्मभूमि बनाया और विकास की नई कहानी लिख दी.

आदर्श गांव

इस गांव में बिजली और पानी की ज़बरदस्त कमी थी. अन्ना ने गांव वालों को नहर बनाने और गड्ढे खोदकर बारिश का पानी इकट्ठा करने के लिए प्रेरित किया और ख़ुद भी इसमें योगदान दिया.

अन्ना के कहने पर गांव में जगह-जगह पेड़ लगाए गए. गांव में सौर ऊर्जा और गोबर गैस के जरिए बिजली की सप्लाई की गई.

इसके बाद उनकी लोकप्रियता में तेजी से इज़ाफा हुआ.

1990 में 'पद्मश्री' और 1992 में पद्मभूषण से सम्मानित अन्ना हज़ारे को अहमदनगर ज़िले के गाँव रालेगाँव सिद्धि के विकास और वहां पानी की उपलब्धता बढ़ाने के लिए विभिन्न तरीक़ों का इस्तेमाल करने के लिए जाना जाता है.

'भ्रष्टाचार विरोधी जनआंदोलन'

भ्रष्टाचार के धुर विरोधी सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता के तौर पर पहचान नब्बे के दशक में बनी

अन्ना की राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर भ्रष्टाचार के धुर विरोधी सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता के तौर पर पहचान नब्बे के दशक में बनी जब उन्होंने 1991 में 'भ्रष्टाचार विरोधी जनआंदोलन' की शुरूआत की.

महाराष्ट्र में शिवसेना-भाजपा की सरकार के कुछ 'भ्रष्ट' मंत्रियों को हटाए जाने की मांग को लेकर भूख हड़ताल की. ये मंत्री थे- शशिकांत सुतर, महादेव शिवांकर और बबन घोलाप.

अन्ना हज़ारे ने उन पर आय से ज़्यादा संपत्ति रखने का आरोप लगाया था.

सरकार ने उन्हें मनाने की कोशिश की, लेकिन हारकर दो मंत्रियों सुतर और शिवांकर को हटाना ही पड़ा. घोलाप ने उनके खिलाफ़ मानहानि का मुकदमा कर दिया.

लेकिन अन्ना इस बारे में कोई सबूत पेश नहीं कर पाए और उन्हें तीन महीने की जेल हुई. हालांकि उस वक़्त के मुख्यमंत्री मनोहर जोशी ने उन्हें एक दिन की हिरासत के बाद छोड़ दिया.

एक जाँच आयोग ने शशिकांत सुतर और महादेव शिवांकर को निर्दोष बताया. लेकिन अन्ना हज़ारे ने कई शिवसेना और भाजपा नेताओं पर भी भ्रष्टाचार में लिप्त होने के आरोप लगाए.

सरकार विरोधी मुहिम

रालेगाँव सिद्धी गांव में अन्ना इसी मंदिर में रहते हैं.

2003 में अन्ना ने कांग्रेस और एनसीपी सरकार के कथित तौर पर चार भ्रष्ट मंत्रियों-सुरेश दादा जैन, नवाब मलिक, विजय कुमार गावित और पद्मसिंह पाटिल के ख़िलाफ़ मुहिम छेड़ दी और भूख हड़ताल पर बैठ गए.

हज़ारे का विरोध काम आया और सरकार को झुकना पड़ा. तत्कालीन महाराष्ट्र सरकार ने इसके बाद एक जांच आयोग का गठन किया.

नवाब मलिक ने भी अपने पद से त्यागपत्र दे दिया. आयोग ने जब सुरेश जैन के ख़िलाफ़ आरोप तय किए तो उन्होंने भी इस्तीफा दे दिया.

1997 में अन्ना हज़ारे ने सूचना के अधिकार क़ानून के समर्थन में मुहिम छेड़ी. आख़िरकार 2003 में महाराष्ट्र सरकार को इस क़ानून के एक मज़बूत और कड़े मसौदे को पास करना पड़ा.

बाद में इसी आंदोलन ने राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन का रूप लिया और 2005 में संसद ने सूचना का अधिकार क़ानून पारित किया.

कुछ राजनीतिज्ञों और विश्लेषकों की मानें, तो अन्ना हज़ारे अनशन का ग़लत इस्तेमाल कर राजनीतिक ब्लैकमेलिंग करते हैं और कई राजनीतिक विरोधियों ने अन्ना का इस्तेमाल किया है.

कुछ विश्लेषक अन्ना हज़ारे को निरंकुश बताते हैं और कहते हैं कि उनके संगठन में लोकतंत्र का नामोनिशां नहीं है.

The Chhattisgarh Association for Creative Training Understanding & Studies (CACTUS), in collaboration with JINDAL, organizes the NATIONAL PAINTING COMPETITION aimed at promoting and enhancing the importance of NATIONAL FLAG through contemporary art.

The Competition is open to all artists, without any limit of age, sex, nationality or other qualifications. Each artist can participate with one or more artworks.

While searching for the cartoonist/painters of the Indian comics of Golden Era, I came across the fact that there were such great artist who kept the world oblivious to their identity by just doing their work quietly. They never craved for name, fame, or money. There are still some artists whom I have met, who never like reliving their self, to the outer world. Though they have a complete family, they like to spend his their life in isolation. From years, true artist of our country, never chased fame or money. The great artist of Indian comics exact replica of the above statement.

My research for the Indian Artist, took me Delhi, Mumbai, Pune Meerut. So many places around the nation. Some Among them are such artist about whom I couldn’t get, satisfactory information.

One of such great artist were "Shekh Shahabuddin" who was addressed as "Shehab ji" while collecting information about him I came across places like "Daravi,Dongari" in order to know more about him but luck didn't favour me. I could not get any information. Then I found "Prakash Nerulakar" a calligraphy artist at "Indrajal Comics". There were some difficulties as during those days only artist, story writer were mentioned in the comics even editor got their position on the last page in very small fonts even calligraphy was not there.

during many conversation with `Prakash ji, Aabid Surti. information which I got about Shehab ji was a silent story full of addercity. Shehab ji was sincere man though he had never shared his grieve with any one, still certain glimpse of his pain could be seen in his arts, Let’s take a quick visit through pages of his life.

He was born in Allahabad City. When he was 12 yr old, his Parent assassinated. His brother was a bus driver. Shehab ji couldn't complete his graduation after matrices in order to have some earnings, he worked as a carpenter. He did cartooning as free Lansing he created many cartoon characters like "Mangalu madari-Bandar Bihari, chhotu- lambu, Chimpu, Chaman Charli", Among these, his most popular character was Chimpu 1984, which was on the last page of comic "Indrajaal". Apart from this, there was one more character, "Chhotu Lambu" form "Parag", published in 1968. He even created many characters like Mangalu Madari-Bandar Bihari, Chaman Charli for Diamond comics. Apart from cartooning he was even a calligraphy artist. For 1cartoon strip he get Rs.5.

It was a time when trams use to serve peoples as a medium of travelling in Bombay (Now Mumbai). there came a day, when he was taking his strip to Bennett Coleman company (Times of India),as train arrived he tried to enter in it, and he couldn’t . Just when the second tram arrived he tried to step on it but somehow his leg struck in it. This incident completely altered Shehab ji life even after losing his legs; he always faced difficulties without any grievance .But he continuously attached with cartooning. Now it seemed like there was a kind of invisible bond between him Dilemma. His cartoon strip Chimpu was a picture story without dialogues his immense sense of humor makes people laugh just by looking at that strip by seeing cartoons only , its was seemed that he was highly with Charli Chaplin who without uttering a single word make people laugh. Even he named his one of character Chaman Charli. he spend his last few days of his life in such isolation that even his friends relatives were couldn't came to know that when this great artist has ended his beautiful journey.

In his short life span Shehab ji was completely devoid towards cartooning become immortal in the history of Indian comics. May be today he is not between us; his cartoon will always paint our live with motley colors.

भारतीय कॉमिक्स सभ्यता की खोज ''शेहाब जी ''

इंडियन कॉमिक्स के golden age के कार्टूनिस्ट /चित्रकारों और लेखको की खोज करते हुए मैंने जाना की कुछ आर्टिस्ट इतने महान है की वह चुपचाप अपना काम करते रहे .उन्होंने कभी नाम पैसा शोहरत की चाहत नहीं की .जहाँ तक की आज भी कई ऐसे आर्टिस्ट हैं जिनसे में मिला हूँ ,वह कभी भी अपने आप को बाहरी लोगो के बीच लाना पसंद नहीं करते हैं.

पूरा घर-परिवार होते हुए भी एकाकी जीवन पसंद करते हैं.सदियों से हमारे देश में होता आया है की एक सच्चा और अच्छा आर्टिस्ट कभी भी नाम पैसा शोहरत के पीछे नहीं भागता है.भारतीय comcis के इन महान आर्टिस्ट ने इसको बखूबी निभाया है.

भारतीय आर्टिस्ट को लेकर मेरी खोज मुझे Delhi,Mumbai , Puna ,Meerut और न जाने कहाँ कहाँ तक ले गई.इनमे कुछ आर्टिस्ट ऐसे हैं जिनके बारे में काफी कोशिश करने के बाद भी मैं बहुत कम जानकारी जुटा पाया हूँ .

ऐसे ही एक महान कार्टूनिस्ट थे ''शेहाब''(Shehab).शेहाब जी का पूरा नाम ''शेख शहाबुद्दीन'' था.शेहाब जी के बारे मैं जानकारी जुटाते हुए मैंने मुंबई के धारावी ,डोंगरी के कई चक्कर लगाए. लेकिन मेरे हाथ कुछ भी न लगा .तब मैंने इंद्रजाल कॉमिक्स के एक कैलीग्राफी आर्टिस्ट ''प्रकाश नेरुलकर'' को ढून्ढ निकला .यह बहुत मुश्किल था क्यूंकि उस वक़्त कॉमिक्स में सिर्फ आर्टिस्ट और कहानीकार का नाम ही होता था .कैलीग्राफी आर्टिस्ट का नाम नहीं होता था .एडिटर का नाम भी कॉमिक्स के आखरी पन्ने में बहुत छोटे फॉण्ट में दिया जाता था.

प्रकाश जी और आबिद सुरती जी से बात करते हुए मुझे शेहाब जी के बारे में जो जानकारी प्राप्त हुई वह दर्द में डूबी हुई एक आर्टिस्ट की मूक गाथा है.शेहाब जी बहुत कम बोलने वाले इन्सान थे .उन्होंने अपनी जिंदिगी के दर्द को कभी किसी के साथ नहीं बाटा,हालाकि कभी कभी यह दर्द जहाँ -तहां उनकी आर्ट में बयां हो जाता है.

चलिए अब शेहाब जी की जिंदिगी में झाकते हैं.शेहाब जी का जन्म इलाहाबाद में हुआ था .जब वह १२ साल के थे तब उनके माँ -बाप का देहांत हो गया था.उनके एक भाई थे जो की बस ड्राईवर थे.शेहाब जी ने मेट्रिक तक ही शिक्षा पाई थी .अपना गुज़ारा चलाने के लिए उन्होंने कारपेंटर का भी काम किया था.उन्होंने कार्टूनिग का काम फ्रीलांसिंग के रूप में शुरू किया था.उन्होंने कई कॉमिक्स Character की रचना की थी .जैसे -मंगलू मदारी बन्दर बिहारी ,छोटू लम्बू ,चिम्पू,चमन चार्ली .इनसब में सबसे ज्यादह मशहुर था उनका चिम्पू.चिम्पू 1984 में इंद्रजाल कॉमिक्स के आखरी पन्नो में हुआ करता था.इसके अलावा उनका एक और Character था ...छोटू -लम्बू जो की पराग में 1958 में publish हुआ करता था.Diamond कॉमिक्स के लिए उन्होंने कुछ कॉमिक्स भी बनाये थे.जैसे -मंगलू मदारी -बन्दर बिहारी,छोटू लम्बू.कार्टूनिंग के साथ -साथ वह कैलीग्राफी भी किया करते थे.....उस समय एक कार्टून स्ट्रिप के उन्हें 5 रुपये मिला करते थे .

यह वह दौर था जब मुंबई में ट्राम चला करती थीं.लोग सुबह-सुबह अपने काम धंधो को जाने के लिए ट्राम का इस्तेमाल किया करते थे .ऐसा ही एक दिन रहा होगा जब शेहाब जी अपनी बने हुई स्ट्रिप को लेकर Bennett and coleman (Times of India) के दफ्टर को निकले थे.ट्राम आ कर रुकी और शेहाब जी ने चढ़ने की कोशिश की लेकिन कामयाब नहीं हुए.कुछ ही समय के इंतज़ार में दूसरी ट्राम आ गई .....इसको पकड़ने के चक्कर में न जाने कैसे शेहाब जी के पैर ट्राम के नीचे आ गए .इस दुर्घटना ने शेहाब जी की जिंदिगी बादल डाली .दोनों पैर गवा देने के बाद भी शेहाब जी ने मुश्किलों से हार नहीं मानी. वह कार्टूनिग से जुड़े रहे.मुश्किलों और मुफलिसी से जैसे शेहाब जी ने अब दोस्ती कर ली थी.शेहाब जी का कार्टून स्ट्रिप चिम्पू ,बिना dialogue की हुआ करती थी उनका गज़ब का sens of humer लोगो को सिर्फ चित्र देख कर हँसा देता था .उनके कार्टून को देख कर लगता है की वह कहीं न कहीं महान आर्टिस्ट चार्ली चैपलिन से inspire थे .जो की बिना एक भी शब्द बोले लोगो को हँसा-हँसा कर लोटपोट कर देता था.शेहाब जी के एक कार्टून character का नाम भी चमन चार्ली है.

अपनी जिंदिगी के आखरी दिन शेहाब जी ने इतनी गुमनामी में गुज़ारे की उनके दोस्त और निकट सम्बन्धी लोगो भी नहीं पता चल पाया की शेहाब जी कब इस दुनिया को अलविदा कह कर एक अनजाने सफ़र की ओर बढ गए.अपनी छोटी सी जिंदिगी में शेहाब जी ने जितना भी कार्टूनिंग में काम किया वह भारतीय कॉमिक्स के इतिहास में उनको अमर करने के लिए काफी है.आज शेहाब जी आज हमारे बीच नहीं है लेकिन उनके बनाये कार्टून हमारी जिंदगी में सदा ख़ुशी के रंग घोलते रहेंगे.

انڈین كمكس کے golden age کے کارٹونسٹ / چتركارو اور لےكھكو کی تلاش کرتے ہوئے میں نے جانا کی کچھ آرٹسٹ اتنے عظیم ہے کی وہ چپ چاپ اپنا کام کرتے رہے. انہوں نے کبھی نام پیسہ شہرت کی چاہت نہیں کی. جہاں تک کی آج بھی کئی ایسے آرٹسٹ ہیں جن سے میں ملا ہوں ، وہ کبھی بھی اپنے آپ کو بیرونی علامت (لوگو) کے درمیان لانا پسند نہیں کرتے ہیں. مکمل گھر -- خاندان ہوتے ہوئے بھی اےكاكي زندگی پسند کرتے ہیں. صدیوں سے ہمارے ملک میں ہوتا آیا ہے اس کی ایک سچا اور اچھا آرٹسٹ کبھی بھی نام پیسہ شہرت کے پیچھے نہیں بھاگتا ہے. بھارتی comcis کے ان عظیم آرٹسٹ نے اس کو بخوبی نبھایا ہے. بھارتی آرٹسٹ کو لے کر میری تلاش مجھے Delhi ، Mumbai ، Puna ، Meerut اور نہ جانے کہاں کہاں تک لے گئی. ان میں کچھ آرٹسٹ ایسے ہیں جن کے بارے میں کافی کوشش کرنے کے بعد بھی میں بہت کم معلومات جٹا پایا ہوں. ایسے ہی ایک عظیم کارٹونسٹ تھے ''شےهاب'' (Shehab). شےهاب جی کا پورا نام شیخ شہاب الدین ''تھا. شےهاب جی کے بارے میں معلومات جٹاتے ہوئے میں نے ممبئی کے دھاراوي ، ڈوگري کے کئی چکر لگائے. لیکن میرے ہاتھ کچھ بھی نہ لگا ، تب میں نے ادرجال كمكس کے ایک كےليگراپھي آرٹسٹ ''روشنی نےرلكر'' کو ڈھونڈھ نکلا. یہ بہت مشکل تھا کیوںک اس وقت كمكس میں صرف آرٹسٹ اور کہانی کار کا نام ہی ہوتا تھا. كےليگراپھي آرٹسٹ کا نام نہیں ہوتا تھا. ایڈیٹر کا نام بھی كمكس کے آخری صفحے پر بہت چھوٹے پھٹ میں دیا جاتا تھا. پرکاش جی اور عابد سرتي جی سے بات کرتے ہوئے مجھے شےهاب جی کے بارے میں جو معلومات حاصل ہوئی وہ درد میں ڈوبی ہوئی ایک آرٹسٹ کی خاموش کہانی ہے. شےهاب جی بہت کم بولنے والے انسان تھے. انہوں نے اپنی جدگي کے درد کو کبھی کسی کے ساتھ نہیں باٹا ، حالانکہ کبھی کبھی یہ درد جہاں -- تها ان کی آرٹ میں بیاں ہو جاتا ہے. چلئے اب شےهاب جی کی جدگي میں جھاكتے ہیں. شےهاب جی کی پیدائش الہ آباد میں ہوا تھا جب وہ 12 سال کے تھے تب ان کے ماں -- باپ کا انتقال ہو گیا تھا. ان کے ایک بھائی تھے جو کی بس ڈرائیور تھے. شےهاب جی نے مےٹرك تک ہی تعلیم پائی تھی. اپنا گزارا چلانے کے لئے انہوں نے كارپےٹر کا بھی کام کیا تھا. انہوں نے كارٹونگ کا کام پھريلاسگ کے طور پر شروع کیا تھا. انہوں نے کئی كمكس Character کی تخلیق کی تھی. جیسے -- مگلو مداري بندر بہاری ، چھوٹو لمبو ، چمپو ، چمن چارلي. انسب میں سب سے جياده مشهر تھا ان کا چمپو. چمپو 1984 میں ادرجال كمكس کے آخری پننو میں ہوا کرتا تھا ، اس کے علاوہ ان کا ایک اور Character تھا... چھوٹو -- لمبو جو کی پراگ میں 1958 میں publish ہوا کرتا تھا . Diamond كمكس کے لیے انہوں نے کچھ كمكس بھی بنائے تھے. جیسے -- مگلو مداري -- بندر بہاری ، چھوٹو لمبو. كارٹونگ کے ساتھ -- ساتھ وہ كےليگراپھي بھی کیا کرتے تھے..... اس وقت ایک کارٹون سٹرپ کے انہیں 5 روپے ملا کرتے تھے. یہ وہ دور تھا جب ممبئی میں ٹرام چلا کرتی تھیں. لوگ صبح -- صبح اپنے کام دھدھو کو جانے کے لئے ٹرام کا استعمال کیا کرتے تھے. ایسا ہی ایک دن رہا ہوگا جب شےهاب جی اپنی بنے ہوئی سٹرپ کو لے کر Bennett and coleman (Times of India) کے دپھٹر کو نکلے تھے. ٹرام آ کر رکی اور شےهاب جی نے چڑھنے کی کوشش کی لیکن کامیاب نہیں ہوئے. کچھ ہی وقت کے انتظار میں دوسری ٹرام آ گئی..... اس کو پکڑنے کے چکر میں نہ جانے کیسے شےهاب جی کے پیر ٹرام کے نیچے آ گئے. اس حادثے نے شےهاب جی کی جدگي بادل ڈالی. دونوں پاؤں گوا دینے کے بعد بھی شےهاب جی نے مشکلوں سے ہار نہیں مانی. وہ كارٹونگ سے جڑے رہے. مشکلوں اور مپھلسي سے جیسے شےهاب جی نے اب دوستی کر لی تھی. شےهاب جی کا کارٹون سٹرپ چمپو ، بغیر dialogue کی ہوا کرتی تھی ان کا غضب کا sens of humer علامت کو صرف تصاویر دیکھ کر ہنسا دیتا تھا. ان کارٹون کو دیکھ کر لگتا ہے کی وہ کہیں نہ کہیں عظیم آرٹسٹ چارلي چےپلن سے inspire تھے. جو کی بنا ایک بھی لفظ بولے علامت کو ہنسا -- ہنسا کر لوٹپوٹ کر دیتا تھا. شےهاب جی کے ایک کارٹون character کا نام بھی چمن چارلي ہے.
اپنی جدگي کے آخری دن شےهاب جی نے اتنی گمنامی میں گزارے کی ان کے دوست اور قریبی رشتہ دار علامت بھی نہیں پتہ چل پایا کی شےهاب جی کب اس دنیا کو الوداع کہہ کر ایک انجانے سفر کی طرف بڑھ گئے. اپنی چھوٹی سی جدگي میں شےهاب جی نے جتنا بھی كارٹونگ میں کام کیا وہ بھارتی كمكس کی تاریخ میں ان کو امر کرنے کے لئے کافی ہے. آج شےهاب جی آج ہمارے درمیان نہیں ہے لیکن ان کے بنائے کارٹون ہماری زندگی میں ہمیشہ خوشی کے رنگ گھولتے رہیں گے. Indian comic books fight back

An Indian comic book publisher (C) and illustrators from his studio are seen working on a comic book called "The Believers," the first comic book which tells of the rise of religious extremism in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The Indian comic book is experiencing a renaissance after ten years in the doldrums.

Walt Disney characters are seen decorating a "tuk-tuk" scooter-taxi. With a steady drip of American cartoons and superhero movies, the young comic book reader in India ditched Hindu gods and goddesses for the adventures of Spiderman, Batman, X-Men and their ilk.

India's first comic book convention opens in the capital New Delhi on Saturday, with organisers expecting thousands of fans to prove the art form is thriving in the Internet age.

Comic Con India will introduce the country's booming youth market to new graphic characters including a warrior blessed by the sun god and a half-otter half-human superhero.

Jatin Varma, organiser of the two-day convention, told AFP that the effects of India's recent economic dynamism have spread from big business into the alternative worlds of youth culture and underground art.

"The number of artists working on comic books has grown, new graphic novels are being launched, bookstores are developing dedicated areas to display comics, it's all pretty exciting," he said.

The Indian comic book is experiencing a renaissance after ten years in the doldrums.

Many middle-class Indians grew up on a diet of Amar Chitra Katha (Immortal Picture Stories) comics, which specialised in Hindu myths, historical narratives and ancient folktales.

But the arrival of cable television and video games in the 1990s saw a sharp drop in readership.

"Indian stories suddenly felt too old-fashioned -- kids were not excited by the idea that they were reading the same books their parents were raised on," said Varma.

Rina Puri, editor of Amar Chitra Katha series, put it more bluntly. "The Cartoon Network channel came to India and it pretty much halved our sales," she said.

With a steady drip of American cartoons and superhero movies, the young comic book reader ditched Hindu gods and goddesses for the adventures of Spiderman, Batman, X-Men and their ilk.

"Every child wants to have some special powers. When I was growing up, I used to wonder where the Indian superheroes were," Sanjay Gupta, president of regional Hindi-language publisher Raj Comics, told AFP.

Gupta's superheroes are defiantly Indian, drawing on popular cultural beliefs -- and they are selling well.

One series narrates the adventures of Nagraj (snake king), whose powers are based on ancient Hindu tales.

Ostensibly an employee in a TV station, he can produce snakes out of thin air and has the ability to spew venom and destroy his enemies with a single bite.

"His eyes hypnotise, his poison breath sears and his bite kills. Weapons do no harm him as his micro-snakes instantly heal the wounds," explains his official Internet profile.

The series also reflects contemporary Indian anxieties about crime, graft and terrorism.

In 2009 Nagraj fought the militants responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attacks, while recent stories have focused on Doga, a vigilante who wears a dog mask to conceal his identity while bringing corrupt politicians to justice.

The revival of comic books will be underlined at Comic Con, with graphic artists rubbing shoulders with children as well as publishers keen to spot the next big thing.

"We know this can't be compared to international conventions like the San Diego Comic-Con, but we see this as a sound investment," Comic Con India's Varma said, vowing the event would become an annual fixture.

"I expect a lot of comic book fans to turn up and hopefully the event will also inspire other people to enter the world of comic books once they see how much fun it can be."

One key element to the convention is the potential for movie cross-overs -- and Indian comic books and graphic novels are catching the eyes of film producers.

"The recent success of films based on comic series have led to a reverse trail of people seeking the book that the film was based on," Amruta Patil, one of the country's most promising graphic novelists, told AFP.

"People read 'V for Vendetta' and '300' after they had seen the hit films. One overhears the terms 'graphic novel' and 'comic' flying around far more frequently, and in more unexpected corners of the room."

Patil's 2008 debut novel "Kari" and Sarnath Banerjee's "Corridor", published in 2004, are aimed squarely at adult readers, with snake-wielding superheroes replaced by impotent men and androgynous lesbians.

"When I wrote "Corridor" and tried to get publishers interested, no one understood what on earth I was writing about. At times, I felt like a pickle seller, going from place to place, trying to sell my book," Banerjee said.

Today, things have changed, he said. "Everyone wants to make a graphic novel now: jump on the bandwagon."

नई दिल्ली। देश की एकमात्र कार्टून पत्रिका कार्टून वाच द्वारा प्रतिवर्श आयोजित कार्टून महोत्सव इस बार दिल्ली के हिंदी भवन में किया गया. 29 अप्रैल 2011 को हिन्दी भवन दिल्ली में इसका उद्घाटन पूर्व राष्ट्रपति और महान वैज्ञानिक डॉ.ए.पी.जे. अब्दुल कलाम ने एक कार्टून caricature बना कर किया. इस बार कार्टून वाच की तरफ से लाईफ टाईम एचीवमेंट एवार्ड पांच वरिष्ठ कार्टूनिस्टों को दिया गया. टाईम्स आफ इंडिया समूह के अजीत नैनन, नवभारत टाईम्स के पूर्व कार्टूनिस्ट काक, मधुमुस्कान पत्रिका के नन्हा जासूस बबलू और कलमदास के रचयिता हुसैन जामिन, छत्तीसगढ के बी.वी.पांडुरंग राव और दिल्ली दैनिक जागरण के कार्टूनिस्ट जगजीत राणा को पूर्व राष्ट्रपति डॉ.ए.पी.जे.अब्दुल कलाम के हाथो द्वारा लाईफ टाईम एचीवमेंट एवार्ड प्रदान कर के सम्मानित किया गया . उल्लेखनीय है कि पूर्व के वर्षो में कार्टून महोत्सव में आर.के.लक्ष्मण, आबिद सुरती, चाचा चौधरी के जनक प्राण, सुधीर दर, राजेन्द्र धोडपकर, एच.एम.सूदन, सुरेष सावंत और श्याम जगोता सहित अनेक कार्टून हस्तियां सम्मानित हो चुकी हैं. इस महोत्सव में देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों से कार्टूनिस्ट शामिल हुए. कार्टून वाच पत्रिका के प्रकाशन के पंद्रहवें वर्ष पर हुए इस आयोजन के अवसर पर पत्रिका के विशेष अंक का विमोचन भी डॉ. ए.पी.जे. अब्दुल कलाम द्वारा किया गया. इस अंक में इस बार सम्मानित किये जा रहे कार्टूनिस्टों के कार्टून प्रकाशित किये गए हैं.

पत्रिका के संपादक त्रयम्बक शर्मा ने कहा कि कार्टून वाच पत्रिका ने विगत पंद्रह वर्षो में छत्तीसगढ का नाम देश के अलावा विदेशो में भी रोशन किया है. लंदन में दो सप्ताह इस पत्रिका द्वारा प्रदशनी लगाई गई, सम्पादक त्रयम्बक शर्मा का साक्षात्कार बीबीसी लंदन के हिन्दी रेडियो सेवा से किया गया, शर्मा को नेपाल में आयोजित पांच देशो के कार्टूनिस्टों के सम्मेलन में आमंत्रित किया गया. हाल ही में कार्टून वाच ने दिल्ली में पहली बार आयोजित कामिक कन्वेशन - कामिकान में भी देश की एकमात्र कार्टून पत्रिका के रूप में भाग लिया था.....अगली पोस्ट में जारी...

Cartoon Watch is the only monthly cartoon magazine of India, published since 15 years. Every year we organise a cartoon festival to felicitate some senior cartoonists of India. This year this event is to be done in Delhi on 29th April 2011 at Hindi Bhawan Auditorium, 6 PM Onwards. Chief Guest of the Function will be Former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

After working with some award winning artists and writers Vimanika has now roped in Director, Chetan Desai from "Ramayana the Epic" fame to make a live action film based on one of the main characters from the comic series. Vimanika has been creating some of the most fascinating artworks in the comic series never before seen in India. It has now taken one step further joined hands with Chetan Desai to make a film on one of its most popular title The Sixth : Legend of Karna.

The story : A successful businessman is forced to go to India in search of the dark shadows that has been haunting him since his childhood days. Awards
Schulz received the National Cartoonists Society Humor Comic Strip Award in 1962 for Peanuts, the Society's Elzie Segar Award in 1980, their Reuben Award for 1955 and 1964, and their Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. He was also a hockey fan; in 1981, Schulz was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding contributions to the sport of hockey in the United States, and he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.On June 28, 1996, Schulz was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, adjacent to Walt Disney's. A replica of this star appears outside his former studio in Santa Rosa. Schulz is a recipient of theSilver Buffalo Award, the highest adult award given by the Boy Scouts of America, for his service to American youth.
On January 1, 1974, Schulz served as the Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.
On February 10, 2000, Congressman Mike Thompson introduced H.R. 3642, a bill to award Schulz the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor the United States legislature can bestow. The bill passed the House (with only Ron Paul voting no and 24 not voting) on February 15, and the bill was sent to the Senate where it passed unanimously on May 2.The Senate also considered a bill S.2060 (introduced by Diane Feinstein). President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law on June 20, 2000. On June 7, 2001, Schulz's widow Jean accepted the award on behalf of her late husband in a public ceremony.
Schulz was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2007.
Legacy
When the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota opened in 1992, the Amusement Park in the center of the Mall was themed around Schulz' "Peanuts" characters, until the Mall lost the rights to use the branding in 2006.
In 2000, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors rechristened the Charles M. Schulz - Sonoma County Airport in his honor. The airport's logo features Snoopy in goggles and scarf, taking to the skies on top of his red doghouse.
The Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa opened on August 17, 2002, two blocks away from his former studio and celebrates his life's work and art of cartooning. A bronze statue of Charlie Brown and Snoopy stands in Depot Park in downtown Santa Rosa.

The Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center at Sonoma State University is one of the largest libraries in the CSU system and the state of California, with a 400,000-volume general collection and with a 750,000-volume automated retrieval system capacity. The $41.5 million building was named after Schulz, and his wife donated $5 million needed to build and furnish the structure. The library opened in 2000 and now stands as one of the largest buildings in the university.
Peanuts on Parade has been St. Paul, Minnesota’s tribute to its favorite native cartoonist. It began in 2000 with the placing of 101 5-foot-tall (1.5 m) statues of Snoopy throughout the city of St. Paul. Every summer for the next four years, statues of a different Peanuts character were placed on the sidewalks of St. Paul. In 2001, there was Charlie Brown Around Town, 2002 brought Looking for Lucy, then in 2003 along came Linus Blankets St. Paul, ending in 2004 with Snoopy lying on his doghouse. The statues were auctioned off at the end of each summer, so some remain around the city, but others have been relocated. The auction proceeds were used for artists' scholarships and for permanent, bronze statues of the Peanuts characters. These bronze statues are in Landmark Plaza and Rice Park in downtown St. Paul.

Religion
Schulz often touched on religious themes in his work, including the classic television cartoon, A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965), which features the character Linus van Pelt quoting the King James Version of the Bible Luke 2:8-14 to explain "what Christmas is all about." In personal interviews Schulz mentioned that Linus represented his spiritual side.
Schulz, reared in the Lutheran faith, had been active in the Church of God as a young adult and then later taught Sunday school at a United Methodist Church.
From the late 1980s, however, Schulz described himself in interviews as a "secular humanist":
“ I do not go to church anymore... I guess you might say I've come around to secular humanism, an obligation I believe all humans have to others and the world we live in. ”
In the same interview, Schulz also acknowledged that he was not exactly sure what a secular humanist is. In the 1960s, Robert L. Short interpreted certain themes and conversations in Peanuts as being consistent with parts of Christian theology, and used them as illustrations during his lectures about the gospel, as he explained in his bestselling paperback book, The Gospel According to Peanuts, the first of several books he wrote on religion and Peanuts, and other popular culture items.Done... Biographies

Biographies have been written about Schulz, including Rheta Grimsley Johnson's Good Grief: The Story of Charles M. Schulz (1989), which was authorized by Schulz.

The lengthiest biography, Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography by David Michaelis (2007), has been heavily criticized by the Schulz family, with son Monte stating it has "a number of factual errors throughout... [including] factual errors of interpretation" and extensively documenting these errors in a number of essays; for his part, Michaelis maintains that there is "no question" his work is accurate. Although cartoonist Bill Watterson (creator of Calvin & Hobbes) feels that the biography does justice to Schulz's legacy, while giving insight into the emotional impetus of the creation of the strips, cartoonist and critic R.C. Harvey regards the book as falling short both in describing Schulz as a cartoonist and in fulfilling Michaelis' stated aim of "understanding how Charles Schulz knew the world", feeling the biography bends the facts to a thesis rather than evoking a thesis from the facts. A review of Michaelis' biography by Dan Shanahan in the American Book Review (vol 29, no. 6) faults the biography not for factual errors, but for "a predisposition" to finding problems in Schulz's life to explain his art, regardless of how little the material lends itself to Michaelis' interpretations. Shanahan cites, in particular, such things as Michaelis' crude characterizations of Schulz's mother's family, and "an almost voyeuristic quality" to the hundred pages devoted to the breakup of Schulz's first marriage.
In light of David Michaelis' biography and the controversy surrounding his interpretation of the personality that was Charles Schulz, responses from his family reveal some intimate knowledge about the Schulz's persona beyond that of mere artist.

Death

Peanuts ran for nearly 50 years, almost without interruption; during the life of the strip, Schulz took only one vacation, a five-week break in late 1997. At its peak, Peanuts appeared in more than 2,600 newspapers in 75 countries. Schulz stated that his routine every morning consisted of eating a jelly donut and sitting down to write the day's strip. After coming up with an idea (which he said could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours), he began drawing it, which took about an hour for dailies and three hours for Sunday strips. He stubbornly refused to hire an inker or letterer, saying that "it would be equivalent to a golfer hiring a man to make his putts for him." In November 1999 Schulz suffered a stroke, and later it was discovered that he had colon cancer that had metastasized. Because of the chemotherapy and the fact he could not read or see clearly, he announced his retirement on December 14, 1999. This was difficult for Schulz, and he was quoted as saying to Al Roker on The Today Show, "I never dreamed that this would happen to me. I always had the feeling that I would stay with the strip until I was in my early eighties, or something like that. But all of sudden it's gone. I did not take it away. This has been taken away from me."^{[cite this quote]}In his later years, Schulz also suffered from Parkinson's Disease. As a result, he experienced hand tremors that made his linework shaky. He admitted that the tremors sometimes were so bad that while working, he had to hold onto the side of his desk with one hand to steady himself.
Charles Monroe Schulz died in his sleep at home at around 9:45 pm on February 12, 2000. The last original Peanuts strip was published the very next day, on Sunday, February 13, 2000, just hours after his death the night before. Schulz was buried at Pleasant Hills Cemetery in Sebastopol, California.
Schulz indicated that his family wished for the strip to end when he was no longer able to produce it. Schulz had previously predicted that the strip would outlive him, with his reason being that comic strips are usually drawn weeks before their publication. As part of his will, Schulz had requested that the Peanuts characters remain as authentic as possible and that no new comic strips based on them be drawn. United Features had legal ownership of the strip, but honored his wishes, instead syndicating reruns of the strip to newspapers. New television specials have also been produced since Schulz's death, but the stories are based on previous strips.
Schulz had been asked if, for his final Peanuts strip, Charlie Brown would finally get to kick that football after so many decades. His response: "Oh, no! Definitely not! I couldn't have Charlie Brown kick that football; that would be a terrible disservice to him after nearly half a century." Yet, in a December 1999 interview, holding back tears, he recounted the moment when he signed the panel of his final strip, saying, “All of a sudden I thought, 'You know, that poor, poor kid, he never even got to kick the football. What a dirty trick — he never had a chance to kick the football!'”

Personal life

In 1951, Schulz moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. The same year, Schulz married Joyce Halverson.His son, Monte, was born at this time, with their three further children being born later, in Minnesota. He painted a wall in that home for his adopted daughter Meredith Hodges, featuring Patty, Charlie Brown and Snoopy. The wall was removed in 2001 and donated to the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California.
Schulz and his family returned to Minneapolis and stayed until 1958. They then moved to Sebastopol, California, where Schulz built his first studio. It was here that Schulz was interviewed for the unaired television documentary A Boy Named Charlie Brown. Some of the footage was eventually used in a later documentary, Charlie Brown and Charles Schulz. The original documentary is available on DVD from the Charles M. Schulz Museum.
Schulz's father died while visiting him in 1966, the same year his Sebastopol studio burned down. By 1969, Schulz had moved to Santa Rosa, California, where he lived and worked until his death.
By Thanksgiving 1970, it was clear that Schulz's first marriage was in trouble, and their divorce was final in 1972. Schulz married Jean Forsyth Clyde in 1973; they met when Jean brought her daughter to Schulz's hockey rink.

Schulz had a long association with ice sports, and both figure skating and ice hockey featured prominently in his cartoons. In Santa Rosa, he was the owner of the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, which opened in 1969 and featured a snack bar called "The Warm Puppy" Schulz's daughter Amy served as a model for the figure skating in the 1980 television special She's a Good Skate, Charlie Brown.
Schulz also was very active in senior ice-hockey tournaments; in 1975, he formed Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament at his Redwood Empire Ice Arena, and in 1981, Schulz was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to the sport of hockey in the United States.
In 1982, Schulz suffered a heart attack. During his hospital stay, President Reagan called him on the phone to wish him a quick recovery.
On Sunday, May 8, 1988, two gunmen wearing ski masks entered the cartoonist's home through an unlocked door, planning to kidnap Jean Schulz, but the attempt failed when the couple's daughter, Jill, drove up to the house, prompting the would-be kidnappers to flee. She saw what was happening and called the police from a neighbor's house. Sonoma County Sheriff Dick Michaelsen said, "It was obviously an attempted kidnap-ransom. This was a targeted criminal act. They knew exactly who the victims were." Neither Schulz nor his wife were hurt during the incident.

Charles Monroe Schulz (November 26, 1922 – February 12, 2000) was an American Cartoonist , whose Comic Strip Peanuts proved one of the most popular and influential in the history of the medium, and is still widely reprinted on a daily basis.

Early life and education

Born in Minneapolis,Minnesota , Schulz grew up in Saint Paul. He was the only child of Carl Schulz, who was German, and Dena Halverson, who was Norwegian .His uncle nicknamed him "Sparky" after the horse Spark Plug in the Barney Goole comic strip^.

Schulz loved drawing and sometimes drew his family dog, Spike, who ate unusual things, such as pins and tacks. Schulz drew a picture of Spike and sent it to Ripley's believe It or Not; his drawing appeared in Robert Ripley's syndicated panel, captioned, "A hunting dog that eats pins, tacks and razor blades is owned by C. F. Schulz, St. Paul, Minn." and "Drawn by 'Sparky'" (C.F. was his father, Carl Fred Schulz.)

Schulz attended St. Paul's Richard Gordon Elementary School, where he skipped two half-grades. When he was in first grade, his mother helped him get valentines for everybody in his class, so that nobody would be offended by not getting one; but he felt too shy to put them in the box at the front of the classroom, so he took them all home again to his mother.
He became a shy, timid teenager, perhaps as a result of being the youngest in his class at Central High School. One episode in his high school life was the rejection of his drawings by his high school yearbook

Military service

In 1943, he was drafted into the United States Army and served as a sergeant with the20th Armored Division in Europe. The unit saw combat only at the very end of the war. Years later, he proudly spoke of his wartime service.
After discharge in late 1945, he returned to Minneapolis where he took a job as an art teacher at Art Instruction,Inc .—he had taken correspondence courses before he was drafted. Before having his comics published, Schulz did lettering for a Roman Catholic comic magazine, Timeless Topix, while still teaching at Art Instruction.

Career as cartoonist

Schulz's first regular cartoons, Li'l Folks, were published from 1947 to 1950 by the St.Paul Pioneer Press.he first used the name Charlie brown for a character there, although he applied the name in four gags to three different boys and one buried in sand. The series also had a dog that looked much like Snoopy. In 1948, Schulz sold a cartoon to The Saturday Evening Post; the first of 17 single-panel cartoons by Schulz that would be published there. In 1948, Schulz tried to have Li'l Folks syndicated through the Newspaper Enterprise Association. Schulz would have been an independent contractor for the syndicate, unheard of in the 1940s, but the deal fell through. Li'l Folks was dropped from the Pioneer Press in January, 1950.
Later that year, Schulz approached the United Feature Syndicate with his best strips from Li'l Folks, and Peanuts made its first appearance on October 2, 1950. The strip became one of the most popular comic strips of all time. He also had a short-lived sports-oriented comic strip called It's Only a Game (1957–59), but he abandoned it due to the demands of the successful Peanuts. From 1956 to 1965 he contributed a single-panel strip ("Younger Pillars") featuring teenagers to Youth, a publication associated with the Church of God.

Charlie Brown, the principal character for Peanuts, was named after a co-worker at the Art Instruction School; Schulz drew much more inspiration from his own life:

Like Charlie Brown's parents, Schulz's father was a barber and his mother a housewife.
Schulz and Charlie Brown were shy and withdrawn.
Schulz had a dog when he was a boy, although unlike Snoopy the beagle, it was a pointer.
References to Snoopy's brother Spike living outside of needles, California were likely influenced by the few years (1928–1930) that the Schulz family lived there; they had moved to Needles to join other family members who had relocated from Minnesota to tend to an ill cousin.
Schulz's "Little Red -haired Girl " was Donna Johnson , an Art Instruction Schools accountant with whom he fell in love. Schulz was planning to propose to her, but before he got an opportunity to do so, she agreed to marry another man.
Linus and Shermy were both named for good friends of his (Linus Maurer and Sherman Plepler, respectively).

Affectionately known as Uncle Pai by millions, the creator of Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle is immortalised by his work

In the 1980s, Anant Pai, universal uncle for an entire generation or two, caused a scramble among siblings on afternoons when an Amar Chitra Katha or Tinkle was slipped under the door by the magazinewalla.

He helped mothers bribe children into finishing their homework with 'bumper issues' on the 10 avatars of Vishnu or Birbal's tales. He shaped the stereotypes of Rakshasas and Rajput princesses in the minds of many.

And if it weren't for him, we would have known precious little about the Panchatantra or the Jataka Tales.

Uncle Pai, who became a presence in living rooms with his personal replies to 'Letters to Uncle Pai' in Tinkle, died of a heart attack in Mumbai on Thursday at the age of 81.

He had been hospitalised last week for a fracture after he fell from a staircase. The creator of the iconic comic books is survived by his wife Lalitha.

As also by Suppandi, Tantri the Mantri, Shikari Shambhu, Ramu and Shamu and Kalia the crow, among others.

These characters helped millions understand that comic strips were not the domain only of foreign superheroes or high school teens seeking dates. Pai, who was born in Karnataka and educated in Mumbai, brought mythology, history, biography and 'general knowledge' out of the academic realm and into the recreational.

The idea for a series on Indian mythology and history first struck him when he was watching a quiz contest in 1967.

He was working with the Times of India books division, which brought out Indrajal comics, at the time.

When participants, who could take questions on Greek mythology, were unable to say who Rama's mother was he decided he had to do something to connect them to their roots.

So, with India Book House, he started a story that eventually contributed to the pursuit of national integration.

The series went on to become a hero on the Indian comic book scene, selling about 90 million copies of more than 400 titles in 20 languages.

In 1980, he launched Tinkle, the monthly that added science education to comic tales. The quizzes and puzzles were the stuff of many a young evenings.

After taking young minds back into the past, Pai helped them reach out to the future as well.

Now the brands have gone digital under ACK Media, headed by CEO Samir Patil, with whom Pai was 'chief storyteller'. And chief storyteller he will remain for many of us who learned our Ramayana, Mahabharata and our Mother Teresa the Uncle Pai way.

Suppandi is Tinkle's most popular character. He is a lovable goof who always gets into trouble.

He insists on thinking for himself, with disastrous consequences, after taking orders from his employer.

Shikari Shambu is a bumbling hunter who is anything but brave.

Shambu's idea of adventure is to avoid trouble and laze in his hammock doing nothing.

Unfortunately for him, trouble knows how to find him. And he comes out on top, in spite of himself.

Kalia the Crow

Whenever the smaller animals are in danger from Doob-doob the crocodile and Chamataka the fox, its Kalia the crow to the rescue.

Two rabbits, Keechu and Meechu, are always saved by him.

Bhoori is the female presence in the clever Kalia's altruistic life.

Tantri the Mantri

Scheming, cunning and devious, this chief minister's always fails. In his aspiration for the throne, he spends all his time trying to get rid of King Hooja.

Crocodiles, catapults and booby traps, he has tried them all. Fortunately for King Hooja, his plans always backfire.

Amar Chitra Katha creator UNCLE PAI(Anant Pai) dead at 81.

Anant Pai, better known as Uncle Pai, creator of Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle comics has died at the age of 81.

Amar Chitra Katha has shown millions of Indians the route to their roots. Tinkle has been the childhood companion of many for over two and half decades. In 1967, the educational comics series Amar Chitra Katha was launched. Each of the comics in this series was devoted to a person or event in Indian history, religion and mythology. Anant Pai conceptualized of all of these, and wrote the scenarios for most of them.

Anant Pai (17 September 1929 - 24 February 2011)

He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award this month at India's first ever Comic Convention held in New Delhi on February 19-20.

Apart from being the brain behind these two comics, Anant Pai had also trained thousands of teens in personality development.

Anant Pai was admitted to a hospital last week for treatment of a fracture after he fell from a staircase.

Thursday morning, Pai suffered a massive heart attack and breathed his last around 5 pm.

पहली बार भारत में Comic Con होना कॉमिक्स प्रमियों के लिये एक नया सुखदाई अनुभव था .कॉमिक्स प्रमियों का उत्साह और इतनी अधिक मात्रा में एक साथ कॉमिक्स का होना एक अलग ही रोमांच पैदा था. comics con के पहले दिन ही आधी से अधिक

कॉमिक्स स्टाल पर यह सुनने को मिल रहा था की कई कॉमिक्स सोल्ड आउट हो गई हैं ....

सबसे ज्यादह पाठको को विमानिका कॉमिक्स के नए अवतार (Character) कल्की ने आकर्षित किया .विमानिका कॉमिक्स के सीईओ ''करन वीर'' दोनों दिन एकदम energetic

मुद्रा में रहे.

पिछले 44 सालो से लोगो का हास्य मनोरंजन कर रही मायापुरी से प्रकाशित पत्रिका लोटपोट के चर्चित cartoonist Harvinder Mankkar पूरे दिन अपने fans से घिरे नज़र आए.सबसे मज़े की बात यह रही की उनके चर्चित कॉमिक्स character मोटू- पतलू

की '' female .... ;) '' जोड़ी भी वहां उनसे मिलने आई थी.

विदेशी कॉमिक्स character Wolverine

और Aladdin के सुपर विलेन Zafar ने लोगो को अपनी ओर आकर्षित किया . इसके आलावा भारतीय कॉमिक्स charater चाचा चौधरी ,crime मास्टर गोगो,क्रिष्णा,कल्की ने बच्चो का काफी मनोरंजन किया .हलाकि हमारे भारतीय character कम ही रहे लेकिन कॉमिक्स प्रमियों की यह दीवानगी थी की वहां चार चाचा चौधरी (जिसमे से एक english fan भी था),कई सारे छोटे-छोटे Spider man और Super man

,Optimas prime, Bat man ,Bat girl

,Harry potter की Harmayni ,Batman का सुपर विलेन Jocker , Jug head ,Poison Ivy ,Harley Quinn और न जाने कितने सारे कॉमिक्स Character वहां एक साथ नज़र आए .

कॉमिक्स ऐसी चित्रकथाएं हैं जो बच्चो से लेकर बड़ो तक अपने तमाम पाठको को कल्पना की अनछुई दुनियां में उतार देती है.भारत में कॉमिक्स की अपनी अभी तक की यात्रा में काफी उतार चढ़ाव का सामना करना पड़ा है .समय -समय पर इस पर घटियापन ,सस्तेपन और हिंसक होने का आरोप लगता रहा है.लेकिन अपनी तमाम आलोचनाओं के बावजूद कॉमिक्स हर बार अपनी बुराई पर सच्चाई की जीत, की तरह उभर कर सामने आती रही है.न जाने क्यों भारत में आज भी अभिभावक कॉमिक्स को बहुत संघ्दीघ्द अवस्था से देखते हैं.

भारत में लम्बे समय तक कॉमिक्स प्रकाशन को एक कॉमिक्स उद्योग का दर्जा नहीं मिला पाया यही वजह रही है की न जाने कितनी कॉमिक्स कंपनियां अपना कॉमिक्स का प्रकाशन बंद कर चुकी हैं .जो कुछ गिनी चुनी कंपनियां गयी हैं वह अपना वजूद बचाए रखने के लिए जद्धो -जहद कर रही हैं .

''19-20 February 2011'' भारतीय कॉमिक्स के इतिहास में अपना पहला कॉमिक्स का ''Comic Con '' (Comics book fair ) के लिए हमेशा याद रखा जायेगा .कुछ एक कंपनीयों को छोड़ कर यहाँ भारत की सभी कॉमिक्स कंपनीयां मौजूद थीं .ख़राब मौसम के बावजूद भी कॉमिक्स प्रेमियों का उत्साह यहाँ देखते ही बनता था .हर बार की तरह हम इस बार भी आप को (indiacomic.blogspot.com) के माध्यम से कॉमिक्स से जुड़ी हर छोटी बड़ी खबर से रु- बा -रु कराते हैं (अगली पोस्ट में जारी)

I can never forget the moments which i shared in his company.

Indian comics are all set to go digital

, with Raj Comics planning to convert its library of 3,000+ titles into motion comics. The company is also taking the same to the Mobile, Online, TV and Home Video platforms. The first three titles being developed there are 26/11, Hallabol and Japan Series at a Delhi based studio. Each title will be of 22 minutes and will be available in both English and Hindi.

The titles are slated for May 09 release along with their print editions. These will first be available on the mobile platform and Raj Comics’ agency is currently in talks with various service providers in India for the same. Raj Comics is looking at launching two motion comic titles every month and every comic title of the publication will henceforth be launched with its motion comic version.

Talking to AnimationXpress.com Raj Comics Studio Head Sanjay Gupta

shared, “Motion Comics is a new media which is a hybrid of comic books and animation based on the actual panels of a comic. There is no motion comic content available in India and even internationally only players like Marvel and DC are the only ones planning to do it. So we thought we should take it up.”

26/11 and Halla Bol will feature Raj Comic’s famous characters Nagraj and Doga. 26/11 is based on the recent Mumbai terrorist attacks while Halla Bol is based on Indo-Pak terrorism. The revenue model for motion comics on the mobile platform will be based on pay per download and pay per view. The company is investing approx INR 15 lakhs in converting each title into the motion comic format. It is also in talks with different studios for its upcoming motion comic titles and is also planning to establish its own in-house animation studio.

The company currently has a circulation of approximately 80,000 copies every month (including India and abroad) and is introducing a series of new superhero characters this year. Theses include characters named Bhokal and Yodha.

“In 2008 the comic space in India grew by 10-20% and is continuing to grow. Hence in 2009 we have plans of taking our superheroes Nagraj and Super Commando Dhruv to feature film and TV platform through the medium of animation. Already the character of Doga has been licensed for being adapted into a live action film which will be directed by Anurag Kashyap,” adds Sanjay.

Anurag Kashyap postpones big budget 'Doga'
Mumbai: Anurag Kashyap has put "Doga", a no-holds-barred action film with Kunal Kapoor, on hold saying it needs international level special effects and for that he need to take some training.
Based on Doga comics, the film will be produced by Sony International.
"That project 'Doga' requires a whole lot of preparation. It needs international level special effects for which I need to go for internship to the US with my cinematographer Rajeev Ravi for some months," Kashyap told IANS.
"This would probably be the most expensive Indian film ever made. And I don't want to slip up. And Kunal needs to do a lot of preparation. I'll go to 'Doga' after 'Bombay Velvet'," he added.Kashyap, who has a history of censorial run-ins, is surprised at how liberal the censor board has been to his "Dev D", which has hit the bull's eye at the box office.
"They understood its theme. It's definitely an adults film with minor cuts. My target audience is 18-35. If there was an over-15 censor certificate in India, I'd have definitely applied for it. Censorship in India is not obsolete any more. Sharmila Tagore and Vinayak Azad have brought in a liberal element to the censor.

50 साल पहले श्री .आबिद सुरती द्वारा लिखा गया कॉमिक्स स्क्रिप्ट (गुजराती).

Indian कॉमिक्स का इतिहास अब काफी पुराना हो चुका है .इसको समझ पाना किसी किसी प्राचीन सभ्यता को समझने जैसा ही है .कौंकि जब Indian कॉमिक्स की शरुआत हुई थी तब से लेकर अब तक किसी ने इसको सहजने की कोशिस ही नही की । आज से 50 साल पुराने Indian कॉमिक्स के कार्टूनिस्ट ,आर्टिस्ट, लेखक ,callygraphy आर्टिस्ट इत्यादि

को ढूँढ पाना मेरे लिए इतना आसन काम नही है .लकिन में पूरी कोशिस कर रहा हूँ । ज़रूरत है तो बस आप जेसे मित्रो की जो इस प्राचीन सभएता की खुदाई में मेरा सहयोग कर सके।

In March 1964, the publisher of The Times of India, Bennet, Coleman & Co., launched a new series called Indrajal Comics. The first 32 issues contained The Phantom stories, but thereafter, the title alternated between various King Features characters, including Mandrake, Flash Gordon, and Buz Sawyer.

Introduction
Indrajal Comics commenced with a monthly schedule. The first 10 issues devoted 16 pages to The Phantom, so many of the stories were edited to fit this format. Twelve pages were devoted to general knowledge (Gold Key style) and other stuff. The next 19 issues were 20-24 pages. Beginning with issue #29, Indrajal standardised on the conventional 32 page format. The series switched to fortnightly publication from #35 on 1 Jan 1967 (released on the 1st and 15th of each month). Mandrake made his first of many appearances in #46 (15 Jul 1967). The cover artwork for the first 50 or so issues of Indrajal Comics was done by B.Govind, with the back cover featuring a pin-up poster.
Indrajal Comics changed to a weekly schedule from #385 (1 Nov 1981) that lasted until 1989. Each issue was individually numbered until 2 Jan 1983 when the editors decided to use a volume and number typical of periodical publications. Hence, #444 was identified as Vol.20 No.1 (see cover above). The front cover design was also changed, with the introduction of the distinctive Indrajal Comics banner.
Starting with #789 on 20 Aug 1989 (Vol 26 No 33), the series briefly returned to a fortnightly schedule with 36 pages each, before the publishers decided to cancel the series in their 27th year of production. The last issue was #805 on 16 Apr 1990 (Vol 27 No 8). A total of 803 Indrajal Comics were published, excluding #123 and #124 which were not printed due to industrial strike action. More than half of these issues contained Phantom stories.

Indrajal Comics provides thrilling adventure through stories every week. Breath-taking, spine-chilling suspense unfolds itself as you turn over the pages of each issue of Indrajal Comics featuring one or the other of your popular heroes. Phantom, the upholder of peace in the deep woods along with Hero the horse and Devil the wolfe, Mandrake the Magician, accompanied by Narda and Lothar, who hypnotises his opponents into surrender, and Flash Gordon who zooms in space to ensure peace in the galaxy. Bahadur - the brave and Bela, Buz Sawyer, the Chief of Trouble Shooters Inc., who fights for the monarch and the meek alike, Mike Nomad who travels far and wide to get justice for the oppressed, Garth who does the impossible in fighting for the right, Kerry Drake the policeman who offers a helping hand to the needy, and Rip Kirby, the ace detective, who solves the most complicated mysteries with relative ease... crime busters all...fill the pages of Indrajal Comics week after week to provide enjoyable reading to the whole family.
In the late 80s, two Indian characters were introduced. Dara, the prince of the spies and Aditya, the man from nowhere.

Nostalgia
Indrajal comics were among the most awaited events on a weekly basis along with other popular comics like Chandamama, Tinkle and Champak. The 24-30 page Indrajal comics could be picked up from newsstands or when the paperboy/man delivered a new issue every week. Some got their hands onto these from circulating libraries which were common in all towns and cities, big or small, while many hunted around "raddi" (old paper) stores for them. In some cases, it has passed hands from one generation to the other, with entire families still hooked onto it and yes, fathers who read them to their little kids. It was among the books in the brown canvas bag that we took to school, and also hidden inside geography books so that parents didn't catch us reading it on the sly.
The readership of the comic is limited to those who grew up in the 80s and sadly, the comic was lost to many who grew up in the 90s and the 21st century. Many forgot about their precious Indrajal comics as they grew up, but a big smile never fails to light up their face whenever reminded about it. There are those who still have the comics stored away somewhere in the attic while for some, it is nothing but a distant memory. A memory...that deserves to be revived!
