Comic lovers in the city are in for a treat as Comic Con Express, the travelling version of the national Indian Comics Convention is all set to happen this weekend at HITEX Exhibition Center from 10:30 am to 7 pm. The travelling convention was initiated with the aim of taking it across the country to help support and boost the comic industry with local interaction and participation. The event offers a range of fun filled interactive activities, including Costume Play (more popularly known as Cosplay, participants turn up dressed in their favourite characters), workshops and sessions with leading artists, comic creators and writers in the country, book launches and lots of merchandise of popular comic franchises. Jatin Varma, founder, Comic Con India, tells us more.
“Comic Con is a huge event internationally and takes place in different cities around the world while being managed by different companies. We noticed a lot of enthusiasm among the Indian audience and decided to launch the event in New Delhi in 2011. Ever since, the event has travelled to Mumbai as well as Bengaluru and has received terrific response.”
While serious comic lovers are still reeling from the fun they had at Bengaluru in June, Hyderabadis are getting a double dose with the convention hitting the city just three months later.
Ask Jatin why the Nawabi city was chosen as a venue, he explains, “Initially we had short-listed Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad along with Hyderabad. But we decided to go ahead with Hyderabad because of the vibe of this city and the tremendous enthusiasm shown by its public. The earlier two express in Mumbai and Bangalore have become annual events and I hope the same happens with Hyderabad as well. I’m really looking forward to a good response.”
Comic Con Express Hyderabad will feature Amar Chitra Katha, Campfire Graphic Novels, Scholastic India, DC Comics by Random House, HarperCollins India, Pop Culture Publishing, Holy Cow Entertainment, Mario Miranda Gallery, Level 10 Studios and Green Gold Animation - Chotta Bheem Comics.
Besides them, various artists, cartoonists, designers and creators from Hyderabad are coming together to showcase their work and participants can interact with them.
